Obituary for Richard J. Marois

Richard J. Marois, 86, of Millbury formerly of Grafton, passed away Saturday, July 1, 2023, with his loving family by his side. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Maureen A. (Friel) Marois, two sons, Richard “Jay” Marois and his wife Brenda of Lakeland, FL, Kirk W. Marois and his wife Tammi of Sutton, MA, one daughter, Monique A. Marois of Littleton, MA; 5 grandchildren, Peter, Bridget, Matthew Marois of Lakeland; Max and Isabella Marois of Sutton along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Cecile T. Slein, Lorraine D. Spencer, Jeanne M. Zeveska, and two brothers Normand R. Marois and Paul Marois.

Born in Worcester, Richard was lovingly raised by Evelyn M. (Boucher) and Ralph D. Marois, a native of Canada. He attended Assumption Prep and graduated from Holy Name. Richard proudly served in the U.S. Army. He was fortunate to follow in his Father’s footsteps working at Marois Brothers with his brother as well as other family. Richard cherished his childhood memories spent with his sisters and brother on Lake Lashaway in East Brookfield. Idyllic summers were spent swimming, boating and spending time together as a family during WWII and beyond.

After marrying Maureen, they settled in Grafton and enjoyed hosting innumerable holidays and poolside gatherings with family and friends on Vincent Road as well as beachside in Dennisport. Richard was a storyteller and entertainer. Whether in Florida at his favorite beach side watering hole or in his own living room, he used his sense of humor to endear himself to others. As he aged, he most enjoyed looking at pictures of days gone by and regaling all with his numerous stories.

Richard’s passions included staying fit, antique cars, golf, history, and sunbathing.

He was a loving and devoted Father but especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, attending many of their sports activities offering quiet support and encouragement. He enjoyed the role as the quintessential uncle to his 31 nieces and nephews.

He was proud of his Franco/American heritage which was reflected by his many years as a member of the Harmony Club, serving as its president in 1977. He was a longtime member of the Grafton’s Lions Club.

Richard’s warmth and genuine sense of humor and wit will never be forgotten.

Non, Je ne regrette rien – No, I don’t have any regrets. Richard’s favorite song by Edith Piaf.

Calling Hours, from 4-7PM will be held Friday, July 7, 2023, at Roney Funeral Home, 152 Worcester St., North Grafton.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass celebrating Richard’s life on Saturday, July 8, 2023, at 11:00 AM at St. Mary’s Church, 17 Waterville St., North Grafton. Burial will be held privately in Notre Dame Cemetery at a later date.
