Obituary for Helen L. Thomas

WORCESTER: Helen L. Thomas, 93, passed away April 10, 2023 at home following a battle with pancreatic cancer. Her husband of 63 years, Edward S. Thomas, predeceased her in 2014. She leaves her children; Edward R. Thomas and his wife Mary of Arlington,Texas; Richard W. Thomas and his wife Susan of Bixby, Oklahoma; Kathleen A. MacDonald, of Novi, Michigan; and Anne M. Thomas, of Worcester, Massachusetts; 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her grandson Paul F. Thomas and her sister Gertrude “Sis” Colby.
Helen was born May 25, 1929 in Worcester, daughter of the late Edward Callahan and his wife Alice (Favreau). She grew up on Grafton Hill and was a graduate of St. Stephen’s High School in 1947.
After high school she worked at BayState Savings bank for 20 years. She also worked in payroll at Iandoli’s and Honey Farms. In her youth she was an avid swimmer and she remained vibrant and active throughout her life. She loved time with her friends, was known to enjoy a round of golf when she could, and also enjoyed reading. Helen loved sewing and crocheting, as well. She stayed connected with friends from her early days in Worcester who would gather and play bridge together. During retirement she and her husband Ed would head for the shores of Cape Cod to their home in West Yarmouth; a gathering place for family, that always brought her happiness.
Helen was steadfast in faith, and was a devoted 65 year parishioner of St. Mary’s Church in North Grafton. All are welcome to gather with her family and friends Friday April 21st from 5pm to 7pm at Roney Funeral Home, 152 Worcester St., N. Grafton, MA 01536. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday April 22nd at 11am at St. Mary’s Church, 17 Waterville St., N. Grafton, MA 01536. Interment will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery in North Grafton.
