Obituary for Carol B. Nowlan

GRAFTON: Our family has lost a devoted mother, grandmother, and a proud and loving friend.
Carol (Bartel) Nowlan, 84, entered into eternal rest on December 13th, 2022.
Born August 9th, 1938 in Syracuse, NY, Carol was the only daughter of Leopold and Edna
(Wade) Bartel. She is survived by her brother Charles Bartel, sister-in-law Roberta Bartel, and
was predeceased by her brother Mark L. Bartel. Carol lived in Grafton, MA for more than 30
years, but her family roots were in Dorset, VT and Stoughton, MA. As a devoted wife, mother,
and grandmother, her true love was her family. She found joy in cooking and baking,
participating in countless family-centered holiday celebrations, and attending her grandchildren’s
numerous sporting events. In addition, she also had a love of nature. She adored all the wildlife
that came to her yard and was the family consult for growing anything green. She spent many
hours volunteering at Tufts Wildlife Clinic and her caring nature was found in her volunteer
efforts at St. Vincent’s Hospital. She’ll be remembered as a warm, gentle soul to all who loved
her.
Carol is predeceased by her husband Joseph C. Nowlan, and is survived by her life-long friend
and father of her three daughters, Bruce Simoneau. She leaves her daughters Therese Morrice
and her husband George, Julie Alexopoulos and her husband Peter, and Suzanne and John
Bridgers; her grandchildren Autumn, George, Maren, Christian, Athena, and Agamemnon; and
her sister-in-law Ann Marco, along with several nieces and nephews. A Funeral Mass will be
celebrated for Carol on Tuesday, December 20th at 10:00 AM at St. James Church (89 Main St.
South Grafton, MA 01560). Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Grafton. There are no
calling hours.
