Obituary for Terry M. Mate

WESTBOROUGH: Terry Marie Mate was born Terry Marie Lane on August 30, 1949 at Niagara Falls, New York, to James Lane, Jr. and Marian Gertrude Lane (Hillman). The family moved to Westfield, New York where Terry attended Westfield Academy and Central School graduating in 1967. In 1970 she married William Weagraff and they later moved to Geneva, Ohio. After they divorced in 1976, she moved to Jefferson, Ohio, and was employed at the United Telephone Company as a telephone operator.

Later she worked as an agent for Granger Insurance before accepting a clerical job for a construction contractor at the Perry Nuclear Power Station in North Perry, Ohio. That is where she met Terry Robert Mate. The two started dating and on July 29, 1989 were married. At that time, she was an export clerk for an Import/Export company in Eastlake, Ohio. Around 1995 she got a position with GE Lighting (Nela Park – Cleveland, OH) doing worldwide sourcing for lighting production and held the position there until 2009.

Terry then followed her husband to Northborough, Massachusetts where he was employed for Staples as Principal Technical Analyst in their Information Technology department and in 2012, they moved to Westborough. In 2010 she accepted the job as the Administrative Assistant to the DAV Department of Massachusetts where she remained there until her unexpected death on February 12, 2021. Terry and Terry were both members of the First United Methodist Church in Westborough where they both served as Trustees and on the Outreach committee.

Terry was also civically involved both in Ohio and Massachusetts. During the 1990’s and into the 2000’s she along with her husband were on the planning committee for the Cleveland Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Around 2002 she became President of the ARC of Ashtabula County. As President she started the Ashtabula County Buddy Walk to support The National Down Syndrome Society since Ashtabula County had no NDSS chapter. She remained involved with the ARC until she moved in 2009.

In Massachusetts and as part of the DAV she was part of the planning and operation of the annual DAV Corporate Golf Outing at Granite Links Golf Course, the DAV Hospital Service Golf Outing at Blissful Meadows Golf Course and the DAV5K at Castle Island in South Boston.

Terry and Terry never had any children. Terry does leave behind many nieces and nephews and great and great-great nieces and nephews as well as the extended Church and DAV friend family.

She is already missed greatly by all who were touched by her. Services for Terry are private. Please remember her with donations to DAV of Massachusetts 24 Beacon Street Boston MA 02133 or First United Methodist Church c/o Africa Outreach Trip 120 W Main St. Westborough MA 01581.
