Something I wrote for dads bday!
I would like to honor my dad, Charles Smithson Regan, today on his 84th Birthday. Wow!! Dad you certainly are a “Bulldog”! Despite the grumpy look you’re extremely friendly, brave, loving and loyal. People are attracted to you young and old. You can make friends on islands, airports, and on the beach. You talk to everyone. The bulldog was originally bred to fight with the ability to withstand attack. You have certainly had your share of disappointment and adversity throughout life. But you have always fought through. Whether it was spending intermittent time in the orphanage, serving time as a sergeant in Germany, picketing for work, or providing for your family. You have survived cancer and a 4 way bypass. You always stayed strong and you “DID it MY WAY”! Even all your Cape friends know this as on Sunday’s Sinatra Nights when the whole bar sings I did it my way for you and with you.
Not only do you have I did it my way tattooed on your arm you have lived every day of your life standing by that. You may not have always made the right decision but you have never wavered. You’ve stood by making it work. You have always worked hard, several jobs at once throughout your life like being a taxi driver, bartender, sweeping parking lots and delivering lobsters. You worked your way up through Mass. Electric climbing poles and huge powerlines overcoming your fear of heights.
You have always been there for mom, Tracey, Tiffany and I. You’ve asked me on different occasions through life how you have done. Well, you have always been a great father. Setting examples and work ethics. You were there for us taking us to Saturday morning basketball and dance class as well as coaching girls youth group basketball and softball. To this day I can come to you for anything. I always knew you may blow up but within 3 minutes you would be on track discussing and figuring out how to fix things. I’ve always known your grizzly on the outside but a big Teddy Bear when it comes down to it.
Dad, you are a great role model. My work ethic and positive traits come from you and I’ve tried to pass those traits along to my children. You’re the most giving person I know. You may not be rich but people would never know that for your definitely rich in spirit. I want to “Thank you” for being you, for everything you have taught me through life – especially how to be a survivor!! I am blessed to have you as my dad and wish you a happy and healthy 84th year. I love you!!!
