Obituary for Roland E. Vandal

Roland E. Vandal
GRAFTON: Roland E. Vandal, 88, passed away peacefully October 31, 2018 at Webster Manor Healthcare Center. He leaves his loving wife Alice (Pion) Vandal, his children David Vandal and his wife Sue, Karen Domey, Janice Arsenault and her husband John, Susan Vandal and Marcia Prince and her husband David, his grandchildren Peter, Pamela, Nicholas and Matthew Vandal, Christopher and Benjamin Domey, Nicole and Heather Arsenault and Mark and Michael Guertin, his great-grandchildren Carson Domey and Joseph Vandal and his sister Dolores Elie. He was predeceased by his brother Ernest Vandal and sister Loretta Walker.
Roland was born at home in South Grafton June 21, 1930, son of the late Albina (King) and Peter J. Vandal. His roots were in Grafton where he lived for nearly 50 years. Following his graduation from Grafton High School in 1948 he served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict. Upon returning home he began a career at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company that spanned 28 years. He then sold real estate in the Grafton area following his retirement. Following his time in Grafton he and his wife Alice spent several years in Naples, Florida and then in Oxford after moving back home.
Away from work Roland cherished time with his family and his day was always made brighter with the presence of his grandchildren or great-grandchildren who will miss their beloved “Grampy”. He was always up for a game of cards or dice with his family or backgammon with daughter Susie and could often be found working on a Sudoku puzzle. In Oxford, Roland always looked forward to his weekly bible study group at St. Roch’s Church, where he joyfully brought a birthday cake when the occasion arose. Roland was well versed in citizenry, as a member of the Benedict Council Knights of Columbus 2379, founder and 1st president of AMIC, an organization dedicated to helping children with developmental challenges, treasurer for Boyscout Troup 106 in N. Grafton, treasurer and president of Naples Land Yacht Harbor, and his involvement in the Veterans Association at Metropolitan Life Insurance Co.
Roland will be missed by all who knew him and enjoyed his warm spirit, sharp wit and love of his family.
The family extends their deepest appreciation to the caring, attentive staff at Webster Manor. All are welcome to gather with Roland’s family and friends Sunday November 4th from 5pm to 7pm at Roney Funeral Home 152 Worcester St. N. Grafton, MA 01536. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated for Roland Monday November 5th at 11:00am at St. Mary’s Church 17 Waterville St. N. Grafton, MA 01536. He will then be laid to rest at Fairview Cemetery in South Grafton. Please honor Roland in lieu of traditional remembrances with a donation to Northeast Arc, 1 Southside Rd. Danvers, MA 01923.
