Obituary for John R. Martin

John R. Martin
GRAFTON: With the sudden passing of Jay Martin on Tuesday, July 24, 2018, the world lost a uniquely generous and universally adored soul. Jay leaves behind his wife of 31 years Karen (Gagnon) Martin, his sons Paul, Brian, and Eric, his daughter Melinda, his sister Wendy (Martin) Weathers of Andover, NH, her children Blair Weathers and Niel Weathers, 9 grandchildren with a 10th on the way, 7 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Jay will be rejoining his parents Lorraine (Zuhlke) Martin and Seth Martin, as well as his brother Kent Martin in the afterlife.

Through his work as owner and operator of Grafton Taxi for the last 32 years, Jay had the pleasure of touching countless community members with his tremendous generosity, kind heart, quick wit, and beautiful sense of humor.

Jay attended Shephard Knapp in Boylston, MA and was a graduate of Worcester Academy. A devoted fan of the Red Sox and Patriots, Jay had an infectious passion for travel, history, music, and family. He spent the last month of his life travelling this country he held so dear, visiting family, the Grand Canyon, Rocky Mountain National Park, Yellowstone, and Grand Teton National Park. Jay’s trip ended prematurely when he succumbed to a sudden illness during a leisurely drive through Little Big Horn Battlefield, where he spent his last hours doing what he loved - slowly taking in a historical site, reading every sign and plaque, and explaining the historical significance while surrounded by those he loved most - his family.

Though his time was cut short, Jay lived a profoundly fulfilling life. His family, friends, customers, and acquaintances were lucky to have him. He changed us all for the better, and he will live on in our hearts forever.

All are welcome to gather with Jay's family and friends at Roney Funeral Home, 152 Worcester Street, North Grafton, MA on Saturday, August 4th from 4-7pm. A private burial will take place on a date to be determined.A Book of Memories to share a memory of Jay or message of sympathy with his family is available online at:
