Obituary for Sherman S. Wetherbee

Sherman Sisson Wetherbee, 75, of Shrewsbury, died Sunday, October 1, 2017, at the UMass Medical Center, Worcester, MA after a long battle with cancer. His wife of 50 years, Betsey Jean (Thayer) Wetherbee, died in 2012.

He is survived by three sons: Royal T. Wetherbee, and his wife Somjit, of Shrewsbury, Matthew T. Wetherbee, and his wife Rebecca, of Worcester, and Mark T. Wetherbee, and wife Pati, of Stockton Springs, Maine; seven grandchildren: John, Chris, Alyssa, Daniel, Wendy and Wesley Wetherbee, and Bia Khayung; and three great-grandchildren: Rylan, Aiden and Reese.

Sherman was born June 13, 1942 in Shrewsbury, the only child of Royal T. and Clarissa Kay (Sisson) Wetherbee. As a youth, he was active in DeMolay and elected Master Councilor in January 1960. He was a graduate of Shrewsbury High School (class of 1960) and Babson College in Wellesley (class of 1963). Sherman and wife Betsey made their home in Worcester, until retiring and moving back to Shrewsbury in 2000.

Sherm loved cars all his life, and began his career as owner of his own repair shop and used car dealership: Sherman S. Wetherbee Automobiles, in Northborough, for over 10 years. He was both an ASE master mechanic, and an ASE master bodyman. He later applied his automotive expertise as a licensed auto damage appraiser for various insurance companies (notably Aetna).

His real passion was antique cars, and was the proud owner of 3 Model T Fords and an even older Model S. He was an early member and past President of the Central Mass Model T Club, member of the Model T Ford Club International and the Model T Ford Club of America, and an organizer of their 2006 National Tour. He won many awards at various car shows and tours over the years, and loved to drive in many parades in his hometown of Shrewsbury and surrounding areas.

Sherman and his wife Betsey were active members of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Worcester. For many years he was best known as "Saint Nicholas" at the church's annual "Breakfast with St. Nicholas" fundraiser -- a role he especially enjoyed.

The family will receive family and friends at 10:00 AM Saturday October 21 at St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Worcester, followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00am. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury, MA.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Matthew's Memorial Fund c/o St. Matthews Episcopal Church 695 Southbridge St. Worcester, MA 01610.
